Main (Primary) Domain Configuration
(the one that hosts the MySQL database)

Step 1. - Log into your domain Control Panel. (www.yourdomain.com/cpanel).

Note: These instructions assume you use cpanel to manage your domains. If your hosting service uses another domain control system, use the equivalent commands to log in, create a new mysql database and associate a user with it.

Step 2. - Once inside the domain control panel (cpanel), create a new database called "lem".

step2

Step 3. - Create an "all-privileges" user and assign this user, to the "lem" database you just created.

IMPORTANT: Remember these settings, (database name, username and password) you will be asked for them later so write them down!

If this database will be linked to, from domains hosted on a different DNS server, use the Access Hosts feature in the MySQL account maintenance screen to list them.

To add a an Access Host you need the server ID data. For instance:

Access Hosts:
%ns500.sameservers.com
%same05.sameservers.com
%saturn.nswebhost.com
localhost
ns1.rdns3.net

Step 4. - Decompress "octopus.zip" file onto your desktop or into a directory on your hard disk.

Step 5. - Upload the "lem" folder to the root directory of the main domain (the domain you installed the MySql database on). Give Public Write permission to the conx.php file using your FTP program (chmod 666).

Step 6. - Open a new browser window and type: http://www.yourdomain.com/lem/install/install.php

Step 7. - The script will ask you for the following information:

Example:

Database Host: localhost
(use localhost if the linking domain is in the same server as the database. Otherwise use the domain, such as: domain.com)

Database User: peter_peter (include the database prefix_ )

Database Password: pete22 (database prefix_ not necessary)

Database Name: peter_lem

Step 8. - Enter an administrator password (this can be changed later).

Step 9. - Follow the link to the Administration Panel.

If you get an error message, you might need to install manually. Check:

Step 10. - Delete "install" folder within the "lem" folder.

----------------------------------
Out-linking (Secondary) domain set-up
----------------------------------

Step 1. - Download the file "conx.php" (located at http://www.maindomain.com/lem/conx.php) to the "lem2" folder on your hard disk. (conx.php was automatically created by the script - Step 8 of the Main Domain Configuration)

Step 2. - Upload the contents of the "lem2" folder to each one of the out-linking domains (including: 'conx.php', 'index.php' and 'top.jpg')

Step 3. - Edit your website to include a link to the lem2/index.php page.

The Octopus LEM - Administration Panel

Go to http://www.yourdomain.com/lem/login.php, login with the default user (admin) and the password supplied during installation.

Fill all the required data, in order. Use Save All Changes frequently, just to be sure.

Add the out-linking domains where you have installed the "lem2" folder contents. (Follow the Out -linking Network Domain Configuration link)

Add the in-linking domains that you want to be linked to, in correspondence to your out-linking.

You can only add domains within the same server (same IP). If you want to add different IP domains you might need to grant access to that host (IP) in the control panel of your main domain server.

Change or leave the default settings.

Link Maintenance

Edit out-links in the out-linking domain network: this feature is for the normal maintenance of the links, once the first customers started publishing their links. The system checks the existence of the promised links, and marks the missing ones.

Configuration

MySQL Host Domain: the system needs to know in which domain resides its MySQL database and the above Administration Panel. We use http://www.mydomain.com as an example.

In-linking Domain configuration: here you list the domains that can receive links from your clients, in exchange for the out-links that they published into the Octopus network. The more options you provide, the better. Some clients will only choose those domains that are thematically related to theirs.

Out-linking Domain network configuration: here you list the domains where you installed the out-linking script. They all act equally echoing the main domain, because they read the same database.

Outgoing email configuration: this is the standard reminder email that you can send to those who are not publishing the promised incoming link/s.

Metatags for all the Octopus pages: this feature helps your pages rank well in the search engines.

Categories: the categories for the incoming links. It is best to be abarcative and allways have an "Others" category.

Change system password: a safety feature. Do not leave the default password ("pass") because anyone will be able to erase the link database.

Navigation

Go to our out-linking pages: this link will take you to the out-linking pages within the main domain. There is one page per category. In all the out-linking domains this page will be exactly the same.

Go to Submit link pages: this link will take you to the Submit link pages within the main domain. There is one page per category. In all the out-linking domains this page will be exactly the same.

Troubleshooting

1) A screen full of errors like this:

\n\n
http://www.foundfirst.com/octopus/%5C%27?c=%27.$category.%27%5C%27">".$category." (".$row["cant"].")"; echo !($i%3) ? "
" : "        "; } ?>
(Empty categories do not show here)

means that you cannot execute .php code on your server. Ask your webmaster to implement it or get a better server.

2) A white screen means that you cannot connect to the database.

Open the lem2/conx.php file to check the error. For instance:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Access denied for user 'neticom_foundfir'@'blazecast3.rdns3.net' (using password: YES) in /home/sxcom/public_html/lem3/conx.php on line 11
Cannot connect to server

This means that you need to add %blazecast3.rdns3.net to the Access Hosts list in the MySQL account maintenance screen, as described above.
